Photoshop (cs2 at least) supports a similar slice function as fireworks. Simply select the slice tool or press `k` draw a rectangle and you can assign it a name and using `save for web` select the slices you want to save!

Make sure you guys announce if you do something like BarCamp down here in Cincinnatti, I'm there. We have a pretty dull area for tech conferences and I would be more than happy to show up.

Personally I still use the fireworks splice tool because it has a better interface for editing each spice's properties. You can open your PSD in Fireworks with all the layers in-tact draw your splice and then from the properties panel you can give it a name, choose the export or "save for web" settings such as gif or jpeg and the quality level. Then you can either export that slice individually or you an export all the slices with the given image names to a choosen directory. The photoshop tool gets you there eventually but Fireworks is much easier and more user-friendly.

Versions of Photoshop 7 and up support the slice option. I can't remember if PS6 does. I slice images in PS all the time and it works great. It's not as flexible or user friendly as fireworks but it saves me from having to open another program just to slice images.

Trovster, Was that directed at us? We are indeed a "podcast", note the rss feed listed on the page and in the header. We are also listed in the itunes podcast directory. What exactly was that comment directed at?

CSSVista is a free Windows application for web developers which lets you edit your CSS code live in both Internet Explorer and Firefox simultaneously. I'm surprised Eric doesn't mention it but it does have a few bugs that cause it to crash. The interesting thing is that it's still more painful to code css without it: http://www.sitevista.com/cssvista/ Since Adobe and Macromedia merged the ability to slice templates and use Save to Web to automatically save each slice in a folder has been available in Photoshop; I use Adobe Photoshop CS2 and love this feature, but you can't have slices that overlap slices so occasionally it is necessary to do it Eric's way, which is: M - Rectangular Marquee tool (select an area) ALT+L, F - Flatten Image CTRL+C - Copy CTRL+N - New File CTRL+V - Paste FOR WINDOWS USERS: Ethan Marcotte has posted a link to a tutorial on how to run Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, and 6.0 simultaneously under Windows XP: http://skyzyx.com/archives/000094.php How does your website look on Apple Safari?
